What it builds

Coherence is building SOMA, a coin-sized implant paired with an over-ear wearable. It records electrical activity around a tumor and can stimulate it, so what a treatment is doing can be watched between scans rather than only at them.

Why it matters

Cancer treatment is mostly checked by scans months apart. Reading the tumor itself, continuously, could show sooner whether something is working.

Risks
  • ?The device is in early studies. Nothing has been approved for sale anywhere.
  • ?Hardware implanted in the brain carries surgical risk and has to keep working safely for years.
  • ?Whether electrical stimulation actually changes how a tumor grows is still an open scientific question.
